Turf Fungus & Diseases: Gray Leaf Spot
Gray leaf spot will target tall fescue and rye grass - though it has affected other cool seasoned grass types as well. The beginning stages of Gray leaf spot are small gray spots. As they expand, they form dark borders and mimic the look of being scorched. The disease will cause the leaf of the grass to become discolored, usually graying from the tip down.
Disease Development Favored by:
- Prolonged periods of leaf wetness
- High humidity
- Warm temperatures followed by cooler nights
- Over watering
- Heavily shaded areas
Corrective Measures:
- Aerate the lawn to reduce thatch
- Do not water at night
- Promote air circulation
- Keep fertility levels adequate
- Decrease shade
